City of Darkness

Bam! Drew slammed his tiny and old apartment door shut, blocking out the piercing screams of his mom. Drew always had a thrill for danger, leaving him in the hands of the police bots on many occasions. Today, he was dragged home for spray painting a colorful and joyous mural in a dark and depressing city. All Drew wanted was for color to return into his life, which his mom would never accept since life was meant to be routine. Drew ran from home as though the world was chasing him.

He finally stopped at his dad’s old building, looking up. He wiped his tears away, fighting to speak aloud to himself, “Dad. Why did you have to leave me?” He slowly made his way to the rooftop of the building. He looked out at the city. The city was awake, but dead. The city lights shined bright, the noise of the trains rumbled, but no matter how hard you searched no one would be loving, laughing, living life. Drew screamed at the top of his lungs hoping that everything and everyone would disappear. He screamed and let out every ounce of emotion in his body.

“Drew?...” Drew turned around but saw no one. “Drew, it's all going to be okay.” Drew threw his hood swiftly off his head, letting his curly hair fall on his shoulders. He looked in every inch of darkness but no one was there. “Dad? Dad please tell me that's you”. Drew fell to his knees, feeling a hand on his shoulder “I’m sorry Drew. I’m sorry I left you, I'm sorry I wasn't able to take you away from this horrible place.” Drew let the tears run down his cheeks “I love you dad.” Drew felt a warmth roam his body as though his dad was hugging him “Son, Look out at that city and remember whoever tries to stop you can’t. You will escape and before then you will turn your home colorful and lively again.” Drew stood up walking to the edge, he was alone again but deep within he knew that this city wasn’t going to control him anymore.
